Titan America’s Pennsuco Plant Featured at Wildlife Habitat Council Annual Symposium

MEDLEY, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) recently hosted their annual symposium at the Hilton Baltimore, celebrating corporate conservation. Titan Florida’s Pennsuco Plant and its Environmental Manager, Muhammad Khan, were featured.

Mr. Khan presented a case study, entitled “Titan Florida’s Ecological Restoration.” In the 1940s, the Corps of Engineers planted what they believed were harmless melaleuca trees in and around the campus of the present-day Pennsuco plant. By the late 1990s, the tree was determined by the USDA to be an invasive species. Plant employees had no choice but to salvage the current and soon-to-be native trees by eradicating the melaleuca trees.

Working over three years with a team of Titan environmental employees and a local biologist, the melaleuca trees were removed and native trees, such as gumbo limbo, live oak and red maple, were planted and are now thriving on the plant campus. “It was a hard fight to reverse the spread of the invasive species but the results are most gratifying,” said Khan, who led the effort.

Fifty acres of land have been mitigated for this project, including an upland tree island that is host to native trees spread over 3,000 sq. ft. The campus now accommodates bird habitants, including cattle egret, bald eagle, wood stork, white ibis and flamingo. A family of otters enjoys the nearby waterways, as well.

Employees at Titan Florida’s Pennsuco complex received international recognition for their contributions to conservation education at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s 25^th Annual Symposium last year. Titan demonstrated its continued commitment to environmental stewardship by achieving Corporate Lands for Learning certification at the Pennsuco complex.
